MIT GLOBAL POVERTY INITIATIVE
|
Global Poverty Initiative is a student organization dedicated to developing and executing development projects abroad that deliver significant impact.
I was in charge of the Bolivia Action Team. The aim of our project was to lay the groundwork for a sustainable recycling system in the small city of San Ignacio de Velasco in the Chiquitania region of eastern Bolivia. I spent two consecutive summers in the country, making contacts with local recycling facilities and gaining support from families and business owners. For more information about the project, check out the report we wrote after our trip in January 2014. |
ACTIVE MINDS @ MIT
|
Active Minds is an international organization that works to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness so that people who need help don't hesitate to seek it. The chapter at MIT seeks to educate students about the importance of mental health, how to identify symptoms of mental illness, and how to access resources on campus.
During my three years in the group, I organized a number of events on campus with Active Minds, to make mental health resources more accessible to students. The group plays a crucial role as the student voice when communicating with administration about how to improve the quality of life of MIT undergraduate and graduate students. |
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
|
As an undergraduate, I spent several Saturdays volunteering at a job site in Massachusetts through MIT's chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Work included putting up drywall, leveling terrain, and replacing insulation for homes of low-income families.

SALVATION ARMY
|
In Cambridge, the Salvation Army offers daycare services to homeless families through "Our Place". I volunteered a few hours after classes each week to help care for children in the program until their parents could pick them up after work.
